PM Modi Begins Historic Visit to Trinidad and Tobago, First in Over Two Decades

World News: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday as part of the second phase of his five-nation diplomatic tour. This visit is seen as a significant step in expanding India’s presence and partnerships in the Caribbean region.

PM Modi landed at Piarco International Airport in the capital city, Port of Spain, where he received a ceremonial Guard of Honor from the Trinidad and Tobago government. Senior ministers and dignitaries were present to welcome the Indian delegation.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar extended the invitation for this two-day official visit, scheduled for July 3 and 4. It marks Modi's first-ever visit to Trinidad and Tobago as Prime Minister and also the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the island nation since 1999.

A New Chapter in Bilateral Engagement

During his stay, PM Modi is expected to hold formal talks with both Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and President Christine Carla Kangaloo. Discussions will focus on boosting cooperation in key sectors such as trade, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, IT, education, and culture.

India and Trinidad and Tobago share deep-rooted historical ties, largely due to a vibrant Indian-origin diaspora, which makes up over 40% of the country's population. This shared cultural foundation is expected to be a central theme in the diplomatic discussions.
